Making the most of underfloor heating in your home

Making the most of underfloor heating

Developers of high-end residential properties are increasingly likely to include underfloor heating in their interior designs.

Underfloor heating is generally considered the most effective and fashionable way of heating a room due to the even distribution of heat and the absence of radiators that would potentially compromise sleek, contemporary design schemes.

Wherever you find an underfloor heating system you will usually also find liquid screed. Screed for underfloor heating is applied over the pipework or mats after the system is fully installed. Once dried, the liquid screed creates a level flooring that protects the heating system and provides a solid, even base on which the top flooring can be laid.

The benefits of liquid screed for residential properties

If your property has substantial floor space to accommodate underfloor heating, liquid screed products from Clockwork Screed provide many benefits:

  • Clockwork Screed provide a quick and clean screed installation. We can cover 1000m² in one day.
  • Liquid screed self-compacts so doesn’t create bubbles or bumps, and it has a low risk of cracking. It therefore produces a smooth, even finish for your floor.
  • We can install up to 100m² of liquid screed without joints in a room that has underfloor heating fitted, and 150m² if there is no underfloor heating.
  • Liquid screed dries very quickly so causes little disruption. Fast-drying options can accommodate footfall as quickly as within 24 to 48 hours of being laid.
  • The liquid screed supplied by Clockwork Screed is a cementitious screed rather than a calcium sulphate or anhydrite screed. This means that our liquid screed can be used in any area of your property, including outside areas, because it is not compromised when exposed to wet conditions.
  • Our liquid screed allows for a higher degree of moisture in floor finishes than anhydrite screeds. It is compatible with floor finishes with moisture levels at 2.5%CM whereas anhydrite screeds can only accommodate 0.5%CM which can take months to achieve.

The benefits of liquid screed for residential underfloor heating systems

Not only can you expect a quick and clean screed installation with all of the above benefits, liquid screed also maximises the effectiveness of your underfloor heating system. Because the screed is poured directly onto the underfloor heating system, there is no risk of gaps around the pipework.

The strength of liquid screed allows it to be laid as thinly as 25mm. The thin application also allows liquid screed to distribute the heat evenly throughout the room and therefore improves the performance and responsiveness of your underfloor heating.

Likewise the thin depth of the liquid screed also improves the performance of underfloor insulation which helps to reduce your running costs and energy consumption.

Building Regulation Changes Regarding Insulation in Roofs: Why Clockwork Screed's Poured Insulation is an Ideal Choice
6 December 2024
When it comes to building or renovating a property, one of the most important considerations is insulation. Effective insulation can make a significant difference in energy efficiency, comfort, and the overall cost of maintaining a building. Here’s why poured insulation, such as the solutions offered by Clockwork Screed, is a smart choice for property owners, builders, and contractors. Poured insulation is a liquid material that is poured directly onto the subfloor to create a continuous thermal layer. Unlike traditional insulation boards, which can be cumbersome to install and often leave gaps, poured insulation fills every space evenly, ensuring there are no cold spots or areas where heat can escape. One of the primary advantages of poured insulation is its ability to enhance energy efficiency. By providing a seamless thermal barrier, it helps retain heat in the winter and keeps the building cool in the summer. This means that heating and cooling systems don’t have to work as hard, resulting in lower energy bills and reduced energy consumption.
